RCT - Our Heritage

Accessible and engaging online collections

RCT Our Heritage is a website which preserves and promotes the culture, heritage and history of Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT).

The website features three areas of focus:

The ‘Our Heritage’ pages explore the industrial, social, and cultural heritage of RCT and its three distinct locations of the Rhondda Valleys, the Cynon Valley, and Taff Ely.

‘Our Collections’ capture Rhondda Cynon Taf’s social history through photographs, audio and film. A Photographic Archive holds more than 20,000 images which illustrate all aspects of life in Rhondda Cynon Taf from the late 1800s to the present day. An Oral History Archive holds a collection of audio recordings of local residents which tell the story of Rhondda Cynon Taf through the words of RCT’s community members, covering a wide range of subjects including childhood, work, family life, politics and war. A Film Archive, offers a unique record of how life used to be in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

‘Our Projects’ enables visitors to find out about the heritage projects taking place within their communities, including Altered Images, whose creative heritage projects showcase the unique stories of RCT’s communities. The Rhondda Heritage Project tells the valley’s history through the words and voices of the people themselves; and the War Memorials project whose volunteers are recording the stories of RCT’s brave men and women who lost their lives in conflict.

The website also enables visitors to explore exhibitions and learning resources which interpret the fascinating heritage and history of Rhondda Cynon Taf in ways which are engaging and accessible.

iBase has enabled Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries Services to produce a website which records and showcases the history and heritage of RCT, and has made its collections more accessible and engaging to a wider range of people online.
